Waterfalls, natural craters, tropical rainforest with enormous ferns and wild orchids: these are the beauties of northern Basse-Terre along the Route de la Traversée (a road crossing the island of Basse-Terre in a tropical forest). Well-arranged paths will make you want to go for a walk. The leeward side is totally different: limestone landscape bordered by an intense blue sea. Natural beaches with an unspoiled ecosystem and an extraordinary seabed.
Basse-Terre’s mountainous backbone acts as a natural barrier. Nestled against this mountain range, are coastal villages which have maintained their charm from another era. Lined with pebbled shores and beaches of ochre, brown, black, and pink sand, Basse-Terre is also home to the Cousteau Reserve, an internationally renowned underwater park (where you can see the submerged statue of Captain Cousteau).
